Classic Venetian writing set.
The earliest known glass objects date back to Ancient Egypt around 1500 BC. In the 11th century, Venice, known for the quality and craftsmanship of its artisans, became the European centre of glassmaking.
At the end of the 13th century, to protect Venice from fire and further destruction, the Republic of Venice ordered the destruction of all foundries within the city and the glassmakers were relocated to the nearby island of Murano.
With growing demand, Murano gained a reputation as a European center of glassmaking in the 15th century, lasting until the 17th. Murano is world-renowned for the quality of its glass and its elaborate designs.
